Stress and Diarrhea – Can Stress Cause Diarrhea?

Diarrhea is a condition that is described as an increase in the frequency and amount of a person’s stool. The consistency of the stool can also change and can become watery. Mild diarrhea usually lasts a couple of days and goes away; while acute diarrhea may last for a period of one or two weeks. The most severe condition is called chronic diarrhea and it occurs on a regular basis.

The condition will strike most individuals several times in a year, for a variety of reasons. The most common cause of diarrhea is a stomach virus due to a parasite or bacteria. However, stress can also induce the condition due to the strain it puts on the person’s body. The common reasons for physical symptoms caused by stress may be extreme life changes such as divorce, the death of a loved one, and others.

When unmanaged stress keeps on triggering diarrhea that can cause loose watery stools, the body may start to dehydrate and lose nourishment. Remember that dangers of dehydration include serious health issues such as kidney failure and neurological damage. Moreover, continuous diarrhea may cause weight loss and malnutrition.

If diarrhea begins to become chronic, it is important to see a health care provider for evaluation and to get the appropriate treatment for the condition. Comprehensive medical care should also be sought if there is a family history of cancer or colitis.

It is very important to manage your stress to prevent the diarrhea from developing and causing more serious health problems. You should always keep in mind that fluid intake should not cease, as the fluids and nutrients lost must be refilled. Most patients take water and sports drinks because these fluids contain sugar and electrolytes may be sufficient. Patients should avoid fruit juices and milk products.
