What Is a BRAT Diet?

Most healthcare professionals recommend the BRAT diet for patients suffering from diarrhea; this should be taken along with lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. It is a kind of diet prescribed to people with gastrointestinal troubles, such as gastroenteritis, nausea, dyspepsia or diarrhea. This diet aims to facilitate easy digestion of foods, and it does not contain oil, which makes it stomach-friendly. The focus of this diet is to return the intake of our stomach to its “compatible” foods.

As contrary to high fiber foods, the BRAT diet is also low in fiber so it helps the stomach to easily digest the food. High fiber foods can cause gas build up and worsen the condition of the stomach. The word BRAT stands for banana, rice, applesauce and toast. However, other BRAT foods include tea and yogurt.

Patients should avoid the normal diet that is usually high in fiber, calories, and protein as well as sugar rich and fatty foods. In addition, health experts say that the BRAT diet works well for the stomach especially if taken as part of a normal diet.

Diarrhea is part of our body’s built in natural immune system and it dispels toxins out from the body by means of a loose bowel movement. If you feel a sharp pain in your stomach, it may have incurred toxins from unwanted foods, or maybe there is too much oil and fat intake that causes the condition.

For best treatment for diarrhea, it is best to avoid foods may aggravate your stomach and worsen your condition. An upset stomach is in poor health and digestion may be difficult. You should also avoid dairy products, sweets, alcohol, fatty foods, and those that are high in fiber. You should maximize your water and fluids intake, but avoid too cold or hot drinks.
