Causes of diarrhea
Diarrhea can occur due to lactose intolerance or hormone change that is taking place in your body. Sensitivity to certain foods or a change in lifestyle can also cause diarrhea in pregnancy. However, all incidents of diarrhea in women cannot be considered as a pregnancy symptom. Women who are suffering from inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome can get bouts of diarrhea. Diarrhea during pregnancy normally does not last for more than two days. However, it can lead to complications because of the danger of dehydration leading to premature labor. The best way to ascertain pregnancy is to consult your doctor and take a lab test.
Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Diarrhea that lasts more than two days or diarrhea accompanied by vomiting, traces of blood in stool or mucous in stool should be viewed seriously. Even if there is a mild attack of diarrhea, it is advisable to call your doctor rather than ignoring it as a pregnancy symptom.
Preventing diarrhea in pregnancy
Pregnancy diarrhea lasts for a couple of days. In some women, it develops as watery diarrhea and does not last even for a day. However, it is better to keep away from factors causing diarrhea rather than ignoring it as sign of pregnancy. Eat a diet that is well balanced, containing plenty of fiber. You must take banana, rice, or food containing starch, cooked vegetables and yogurt regularly.
Ensure that you drink plenty of water during pregnancy because lack of water content in the body results in dehydration and constipation. Caffeinated drinks like coffee also cause dehydration. Avoid spicy food and drinks containing high sugar levels. Keep away from milk and dry fruits when you are down with bouts of diarrhea because these drinks make the diarrhea persist. It has been found that eating plenty of salads and drinking prune juice indirectly helps pregnant women from bouts of diarrhea. However, if you are down with pregnancy diarrhea, it is advisable to keep away from fiber-contained foods.
